We support the Code of Ethics which are the principles and standards of professional behaviour for policing in England and Wales. These principles are set by the College of Policing.
In January 2024, we introduced the Code of Ethics, outlining the professional behaviours expected from officers, staff, and volunteers.
The Code of Ethics supports fair, ethical, and trustworthy decision-making to ensure public safety.
Following it helps police professionals do the right things, the right way, and for the right reasons.
The 2024 version is based on evidence and first-hand experience, making it relevant to everyone in policing.
The College of Policing have condensed the nine principles from the 2014 Code into three principles:
• Courage
• Respect and Empathy
• Public Service
These are supported by guidance that sets out what ethical and professional behaviour looks like on a day-to-day basis.
