Man given hospital order following attempted murder in busy Devizes street

A man has been sent to a psychiatric unit and given an indefinite restraining order for the attempted murder of a man in Devizes last summer.

Kubilay Bostanli, 27, of Anzio Road, Devizes, was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on Friday (25/04) after being found guilty by trial in January.

Bostanli was also sentenced for assaulting an emergency worker.

It follows an incident at around 12.30pm on June 29, 2024, when Bostanli assaulted his victim, a man in his 20s, near Sidmouth Street. The man was physically assaulted inside the butcher's and then chased to Estcourt Street. When police arrived, Bostanli assaulted the officer trying to detain him by pulling her around by her hair.

Bostanli's male victim suffered two stab wounds to his neck and other facial and ear injuries.

DC Jo Newbery from CID said, "This was a sustained and terrifying attack during which the victim fought for his life.

"Kubilay Bostanli used extreme violence against his victim, which was witnessed by a large number of people given the time of day and location of the assault.

"I'd like to thank the victim for his bravery in working with the police and who medical staff say is lucky to still be here. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the three members of the public who helped to provide first aid to the victim."

PC Crabbe, who attended the incident, was thanked by the former High Sheriff Dr Olivia Chapple with a commendation earlier this month, along with three residents who helped protect the victim.

Chief Superintendent Guy Elkins attended the ceremony and said, "It is a huge privilege for me to see the actions of PC Crabbe recognised by the High Sheriff, and I am hugely proud of her. Without her bravery, Bostanli's victim would almost certainly not be alive today.

"Policing is about going the extra mile and about giving it your all to protect people, prevent crime, deliver justice for victims and safeguard people who are vulnerable to risk."

PC Crabbe has also been nominated for a Police Bravery Award. The winners will be announced during an event in July in London.
