Four arrested following disorder after England football match

Four people are in custody following a significant disorder at the Steam Railway Pub in Swindon on Wednesday evening which had been showing the semi-final match between England and the Netherlands.

At around 10.25pm, we responded to reports of a disorder initially inside the venue which then spilled out onto Newport Street.

Four people in their 20s are thought to have suffered facial injuries which required hospital treatment.

Following local proactive enquiries yesterday, we have arrested four men aged 18, 18, 19 and 22 on suspicion of violent disorder, possession of a bladed article and possession of class A controlled drugs.

All four remain in custody at this time.

Inspector David Tippetts of Swindon Central South neighbourhood team said: “This level of violence is completely unacceptable, particularly when so many people are out attempting to enjoy what should have been a good-natured event.

“Our officers who were on duty specifically due to the football were quickly on scene to manage the incident, and I’d also like to thank the staff from the venue who assisted in attempts to stop the disorder.

“Following swift local enquiries, we have arrested four men in connection with the incident, and they are due to be questioned this morning.

“There were hundreds of people in the area at the time due to the match and I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the disorder or the lead up to it, or has mobile phone video footage, to please get in touch on 101 quoting reference 54240081066.”

Inspector Tippetts also had a message for the public ahead of the final on Sunday evening.

He said: “You will see additional officers out and about on Sunday conducting reassurance patrols to ensure everyone out to enjoy the football is able to do so safely.

“We are also continuing to work closely with venues in Swindon and the Swindon Borough Council licensing department and we will not hesitate to take robust action if there are any further instances of antisocial behaviour or disorder.

“Please remember that the officers are not there to ruin your evening but to ensure everyone has a safely and enjoyable time.

“If you have any concerns then please don’t hesitate to speak to one of them.”
