Three people were arrested for drink or drug driving offences last week (7/2) as part of Project Zero.
Project Zero is a roads policing operation held every week at a different location in the county.
It sees officers targeting drivers committing any of the fatal five offences in a bid to reduce the number of casualties on our roads. While the work taking place is very much everyday work for our RPU officers, the project sees the department intensify resources to target those who are driving at excess speed, drink/drug driving, using a phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt or driving in a careless or dangerous manner.
During the day of action, three arrests were made including a man in his 50s who was stopped driving along Queensfield – he provided a positive roadside breath test and was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. Further checks were carried out and he was further arrested on suspicion of driving otherwise than in accordance with a drivers licence and driving with no insurance. He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
A man in his 40s was also arrested in Blunsdon St Andrew after failing a roadside drug wipe test. He’s been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
A/Insp Will Ayres from the Roads Policing Unit said: “As well as three arrests, the team identified 68 offences linked to the Fatal Five during the day in Swindon. These range from drivers failing to wear seatbelts, to using mobile phones at the wheel.
“This is unacceptable behaviour when driving – we are committed to identifying those who commit such offences in order to make our roads as safe as possible for all road users.”
