At approximately 7.50pm, officers were called to Wine Street in Devizes following an initial report of criminal damage to a shop window.
A description of the individual involved was given to officers and when they attended the scene they found a shop window smashed with blood splatters at the scene.
Two mobile phones were reported to have been stolen from the shop.
Searches were conducted and a police dog managed to pick up a scent which was tracked through the town to the canal where a man in his 30s from Bradford-on-Avon was located and arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of class A drugs.
He was taken to custody in Swindon for further questioning.
Enquiries are ongoing.
