Police were called to an address in Innox Road at approximately 7pm following a report that the homeowner had disturbed a man who is believed to have broken in to his garden shed.
The padlock on the shed had been cut and attempts had been made to make off with a number of items from inside. The homeowner had detained the man until police arrived.
A man in his 40s from Trowbridge was arrested on suspicion of burglary, going equipped to steal and possession of class A drugs. He remains in custody in Melksham for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing today in relation to the incident.
Sgt Charly Chilton said: “We understand that burglary can be extremely upsetting for a victim and we would urge residents to always be mindful of their home security and be vigilant with regards to suspicious activity in your neighbourhood.
“If you see anybody acting suspiciously in your area, either around vehicles, or outbuildings, please do make a note of any vehicles being used, or the direction of travel and report your concerns to police.
“I’m pleased that on this occasion the homeowner alerted police immediately and officers were able to make a swift arrest.”
