Two men have been arrested following a distraction burglary in Calne.
The burglary at an address in The Pippin is believed to have occurred on February 9. An elderly woman who suffers with dementia was targeted by four men. During the incident, the woman was distracted by one of the men, while another man entered the property via a rear door.
A safe containing a large amount of money was stolen. It is believed the men had attended the address on several occasions prior to the incident under the guise of carrying out maintenance work at the property.
Enquiries have been ongoing since the incident, and this week officers have arrested a 17-year-old male from Surrey and a 21-year-old man from Christian Malford both on suspicion of burglary and fraud by false representation in relation to a separate incident in Old Town, Swindon, in December, during which an elderly couple were conned into paying several thousands of pounds for work to be carried out on their address.
Det Sgt Darren Penny said: “Both of these incidents understandably caused a significant amount of distress to the victims and officers have been working hard since the initial report. I am pleased to say we have arrested two individuals in relation to both incidents and enquiries remain ongoing.”
Both males have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
