Officers in Chippenham are gearing up for the busy festive period and will be out and about in the town centre in the coming weeks targeting shoplifters and purse dippers.

As part of Operation Sleigh, your local officers will be increasing patrols in and around the centre of Chippenham as well as out of town retail parks including Bath Road Retail Park and Hathaway.

They’ll be working closely with shop owners in an attempt to tackle shoplifting over the busy weeks leading up to the big day, and they’ll be engaging with the local community around how to stay safe when out and about and how to reduce your risk of falling victim to purse thefts.

Sgt Rich Marshall said: “We know that in the lead up to Christmas our town centres and shopping parks see an increase in footfall. Unfortunately, opportunist thieves will also be operating in these areas. We are determined to act as a deterrent by increasing our presence in the town centre throughout the next few weeks. Do not be alarmed if you see a heightened police presence – officers are out and about to keep you safe and if you have any concerns or have seen something suspicious, please do approach them and they will be happy to help.

"The teams will also be engaging with members of the public around the ongoing Covid-19 guidance and rules on face coverings.

“We want people to come into our town and enjoy the shops and restaurants on offer – so we’ll be working closely with local CCTV operators and the town council to tackle any anti-social behaviour and taking a robust approach towards any individuals committing this type of crime and preventing others from enjoying the festivities safely.”
