Security marking your phone can deter thieves and will make it harder for them to sell a stolen phone.
Keep a record of your phone's IMEI number (a 15 digit serial number) and keep it safe.
The IMEI/serial number on your phone is a number that is unique to a mobile phone. It also allows mobile phone operating companies to prevent a reported stolen handset from being used on the network.
To find out your IMEI number type *#06# into your phone.
Always use your phone's security lock. Remember where you leave your phone. Don't leave it on display in a car or on a table in a busy area.
Keep it in your pocket or handbag, locked away and out of sight.
How to report it stolen or lost and what the police can do
If your phone is stolen report it to your network operator who can cancel it quickly, in the same way as a stolen credit card.
If you want to report that a phone has been stolen or lost, we will need a record of the IMEI number for the mobile phone so it can be recognised if the phone is handed in or recovered. The caller should be advised to contact their provider to obtain this if it is not known,
