Top ten tips

  1. Decide how you are going to get home at the beginning of the evening - if there is a designated driver make sure they do not drink.
  2. Keep together with your friends and do not let one of the group go off on their own even if it's to the cash point.
  3. Take your drinks directly from the bar person and never leave them unattended.
  4. Do not go off with anyone you have only just met. Arrange to meet them the next day.
  5. Walk away from trouble - alcohol not only makes you more likely to become a victim, but it fuels violence and you may become the offender.
  6. Never leave your bag, phone or purse unattended.
  7. If walking home, try not to walk alone, stick to brightly lit main roads and do not take short cuts or lifts from people you don't know.
  8. If you feel threatened don't be afraid to make a lot of noise and attract attention
  9. Listen to your instincts - if you feel like there is something wrong there probably is - act straight away and remove yourself from danger
  10. Place very drunk people in the recovery position and watch over them.  Call an ambulance if you are concerned
