We're appealing for witnesses after a 40-year-old man was assaulted in Amesbury last night.

At approximately 6.30pm, the man and his friend were walking in the High Street, when they were approached by a man who accused them of spitting on a family member.

The two men ignored the man and walked on to the Co-Op. After this, they started walking towards Aldi, when they noticed the man once again, who had been joined by a second man and a woman. The two men began punching the victim and verbally abused him and his friend.

The victim sustained swelling, cuts and bruising to his face, ear, head and shoulder.

The main suspect, who is not known to the victim, is described as white, aged in his late teens, and of a skinny build. He had ginger hair and was wearing a black coat.

Officers have been carrying out enquiries into the incident overnight and have been gathering any available CCTV footage.

We believe there were a number of witnesses to the incident and we are keen to hear from them as soon as possible.
