Jem Carter was born and grew up in Salisbury.

After leaving school at 16 he spent 5 years in the military, joining Wiltshire Police in 1991. During his extensive service Jem has carried out an array of specialist roles both within the CID and across the wider Force.

Jem was promoted to D/Supt in March 2018 and since then has been the Head of Swindon CID. Prior to this Jem was the DCI Head of MCIT for three years, where he led the Force's response to homicide. He is a qualified SIO and PiP4 (SIO Advisor). His investigative career has included enquiries in Northern Ireland, Greece and most recently New Zealand.

Jem continues to live in Salisbury and is married with two teenage sons. With his advancing years Jem has recently become a keen 'Park-Runner', clocking up 40 such runs in the last 12 months.
