BTB MS end

This week we have been asking our followers to start talking more about modern slavery.

We have asked you to familiarise yourselves with the different types of modern slavery happening here in the UK.

We have asked you to learn the signs to spot that might indicate someone could be being exploited.

We have asked you to share any information on modern slavery or any concerns you might have with police.

We have asked you to make informed and ethical purchase decisions when buying services and to question if a deal seems too good to be true.

We all have the power to help end modern slavery.

Modern slavery is more than just not being paid a 'fair wage' for work done, or not being paid at all. There are lots of types of modern slavery, including labour exploitation where potential victims of modern slavery could be washing your cars, painting your nails and picking your vegetables. Violence, intimidation and threats are used to silence them.

Another type of modern slavery is sexual exploitation. The harrowing impacts of being sexually exploited are far and wide.

Recent Home Office research has shown that a typical case of sexual exploitation leads to 388 rapes, 407 other sexual offences and 34 violent crimes being committed against each victim.

Many victims of sexual exploitation also suffer from depression, fear and anxiety and catch sexually transmitted infections.

Victims of modern slavery and human trafficking can be any age, any gender, any ethnicity. But they all have one thing in common, they are all vulnerable and they all deserve our help.

Information from the public is vital in the fight against modern slavery. Together as a community we can eradicate slavery and trafficking in Wiltshire, and reduce the exploitation of the most vulnerable people
