Sometimes we need to seize property to aid an investigation. This is what you need to know to get it back.

If the investigation is ongoing or is being dealt with at court, your property will not be returned until the investigation or court case has ended and you have been notified of the result.

Any property where ownership is disputed will only be released to the rightful owner with proof of ownership.

If someone is collecting property for you, or you are collecting property for an organisation you will need written consent from the owner.

Getting property returned:

Call 101 (non-emergency number) and ask to be transferred to Special Property or enter the extension number when prompted:

Swindon: extension 77467026

Melksham: extension 77461130

Salisbury: extension 77438406

Please provide your full name, date of birth, current address, contact number, officer in the case if known and the type of property e.g. mobile phone, clothing, laptop.

If your call goes to voicemail please leave a message with the above details and one of the special property officers will contact you.

Please note

Do not attend the police station without prior notification from Special Property that the property is ready for collection as it is likely you will be asked to return at an alternative time and date.

The return of property is not a quick process and can take up to a minimum of 5 working days and in some cases several weeks.

When collecting property please ensure you bring photo ID otherwise the enquiry office staff will not return property to you.
