The oldest county Force in the country, Wiltshire Police was formed in 1839 and has a unique place in the history of policing. The Force is responsible for policing the county of Wiltshire and Borough of Swindon in South West England, with some 2000 police officers and police staff working around the clock.

The Force is committed to keeping Wiltshire amongst the safest counties in the country and serves an increasingly diverse population of approximately 635,000 people across 1,346 square miles - from Swindon's lively urban areas to the rolling countryside and iconic sites such as Stonehenge, Avebury and Salisbury Cathedral.

Wiltshire Police is led by Chief Constable Michael Veale with the day-to-day policing services delivered across the County, headed by Superintendents and supported by specialist units.

The Force is particularly interested in recruiting substantive Police Constables, Detective Constables, Authorised Firearms Officers and Detective Constables with the ability to evidence their experience in the investigation of serious and complex crime for the Wiltshire Major Crime Team (MCIT). Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to transfer to Wiltshire Police, you must:
• Be a substantive police/detective constable and not subject to a probationary period (at time of application)
• Be a current serving police officer in a Home Office force or hold a diploma in policing qualified to level 3 (e.g. BTP)
• DC’s must be ICIDP Accredited or hold a PIP Level 2 Investigation qualification
• Pass the necessary vetting and occupational health checks
• Hold a full UK manual driving licence
• Have no outstanding discipline or integrity issues
• Be able to show commitment to achieving high levels of attendance
• Not be a member of the British National Party (BNP) or similar organisation
• Declare any business interest
• Be able to satisfy tattoo guidelines
• Applicants who have existing County Court judgements outstanding against them or who are registered bankrupt and their bankruptcy debts have not been discharged for at least three years will not be considered for appointment.
• Applicants with Individual Voluntary Agreements (IVA) will be looked at on an individual basis.

Specialist roles

In order to apply for any specialist role you must be accredited as described, with your skills valid and current.
Armed Response Officers within the Tri Force Specialist Operations Collaboration
You will be required to provide, as directed, specialist operational skills and resources to any occurrence requiring firearms support for the Tri Force geographical area. In particular successful applicants will deploy to any spontaneous firearms incident, planned firearms operation or other significant incident or event anywhere within the Tri Force area, including routine patrol of the Fast Road Network and crew an armed response vehicle whilst also being responsible for the security and safe keeping of the vehicle and its equipment.

Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the criteria above, to be eligible to transfer to Wiltshire Police as an armed response officer, you must:

  • Be operationally and occupationally competent in the Armed Response Vehicle role (ARV) profile as per the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC)
  • Be trained in advanced driving
  • Submit a copy of your firearms training record endorsed by your Chief Firearms Instructor

If successful you would be required to attend a short course at Black Rock.

The Process

1. Your application is paper-sifted to ensure you meet eligibility criteria as above
2. You will be invited to attend a values-based interview. You will be assessed against the Wiltshire Values and Behaviours.
3. Following a successful interview, vetting and medical checks will be initiated
4. You will be required to attend a medical appointment which will be arranged with our Occupational Health Unit
5. We will contact your line manager and your current Force’s HR department for a reference confirming your service dates, vetting and PSD checks and salary details
6. Following vetting and medical clearances you will be posted* onto the next available intake
7. Upon starting with Wiltshire Police you will attend a 1 week induction course after which you will start on shift

* Postings are determined taking into account both individual preferences and the resourcing needs of the organisation. Whilst every effort will be made to meet individual preferences this, regrettably, cannot always be guaranteed. There will be an opportunity to discuss posting preferences in detail at the interview stage of your application.

** All postings will require the individual to serve at least 2 years in that role unless organisational demands dictate otherwise or officers are successful with a promotion application.

How long does the process take?

The transfer process takes approximately four to six months from the date your application is received. However this is subject to organisational requirement, satisfactory vetting, occupational health clearance and the date of planned intakes.

There are several things that can delay the process, such as;
• Failure to complete all parts of the application or to include copies of all the documents requested
• The vetting process can take time. Full and timely completion of all application or correspondence from Wiltshire Police will assist us in this process.
• If you have an outstanding complaint or vetting issue
• A medical query being raised by the occupational health doctor which may need reference to your doctor or specialist or if your current force is slow to provide your medical health notes. It is important that you understand any potential consequences to ill-health benefits arising from moving between forces following the changes to the Police Pension Scheme 2015. You should contact your pensions administrator in the first instance for further information.
