Wiltshire Police are warning motorists about the dangers of not adhering to motorway regulations after an incident on the M4 on Saturday 31st October almost resulted in a fire engine colliding with a number of vehicles.

Just after 1pm a car collided with the central reservation near to junction 15 on the M4. Instead of waiting in the queue of traffic, a number of drivers travelling eastbound became impatient, turned their vehicles around and drove back up the junction 15 entry slip road.

This action not only blocked the slip road for emergency services travelling to the scene, but almost resulted in a fire engine colliding with a number of the vehicles.

Sergeant Warren Knight, Roads Policing Unit, said: "The action of these drivers showed complete disregard for the law and for the lives of others. While they may have saved a few minutes on their journey, the action they took delayed the emergency services in reaching the scene and could have caused further casualties had they collided with the fire engine."

"We will be reviewing the CCTV footage of the scene to consider whether action can be taken against these drivers."
