The Wiltshire Police Vehicle Recovery Scheme (VRS) commenced on 1st October 1999, as a result of a Court of Appeal decision requiring all police forces to provide an efficient and competent method of removing and retaining vehicles meeting certain criteria.

Some police schemes are managed internally, whilst others operate through specialist management companies. Wiltshire Police contract its work to a vehicle recovery management company, namely The Automobile Association (AA).

The AA currently manage 17 forces within the United Kingdom. They provide the police with a designated call centre, from which they manage vehicle recovery requirements and seizure by liaising with approved recovery operators within the relevant force area.  They monitor procedures and standards at recovery operators and ensure that they meet the requirements of the force and legislation.

The Operators used by Wiltshire Police are vetted and contractually obliged to provide specialised vehicles and facilities. This ensures the safe, efficient recovery of vehicles and the protection and retention of evidence where necessary.

Wiltshire Police recover approximately 4000 vehicles a year in the course of their duties across the policing spectrum.

The Wiltshire Police vehicle recovery office is staffed from 8.00am - 1.00pm Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 0845 408 7000. Outside of these hours queries should be raised through the force contact centre on the same number.
