The Right to Access Information PDF Print E-mail

Individuals have the right of access to information about themselves ('personal data') which is held by the Force, under the Data Protection Act 1998. This is known as Internal Link subject access and should be used if you want to access your own data. As far as public authorities are concerned, the Freedom of Information Act extended individuals rights to request access to all the types of information held, whether personal or non-personal.

The Act does, however, set out some exemptions to this right and it also places a number of obligations on public authorities about the way in which they provide information. Subject to the exemptions anyone making a request has the right to be told whether information exists and the right to receive the information. In general, a response must be provided within 20 working days.

There is also a duty on public authorities to provide advice or assistance to anyone seeking information (for example in order to explain what is readily available or to clarify what is wanted).

Our publication scheme has been designed to highlight information and publications that are currently available from Wiltshire Police. Where information is available on the website a hypertext link will direct you to the correct page on the website. Where no online version is available, you should apply in writing to:

Force Disclosure Unit
Devizes HQ
London Road
Devizes, Wiltshire
SN10 2DN

Or alternatively email: disclosure@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk

When requesting information included in this scheme please include the following details:

  • Your name and address
  • The information or documents you would like to access
  • The way you would like the information to be sent to you (e.g. hard copy, via email)

Depending on the nature of your request a fee may be payable.

Whilst the Force adopts the spirit of legislation surrounding the Freedom of Information Act and looks to release information either through requests or the Publication Scheme, there is information that the Force regularly provides outside of these formats.

Such information is exempt under Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act as it is reasonably accessible by other means. You can see a list of information which is available outside the scheme by following the link below to the category Internal Link ‘Significant Public Interest' which has been created in addition to the publication scheme. On occasions, fees may be charged for information that appears within this category. Details of any charges will be clearly stated.

How long will it take?

We aim to provide information listed in the publication scheme within ten working days. We will make every effort to respond to other written requests within 20 working days.
