This cordon is established to allow only essential vehicles to the scene. Through working with the traffic Police traffic will be diverted away in such a way to prevent congestion and allow responding vehicles a safe and timely passage to the scene. A traffic cordon may extend 15-20 miles away from the incident depending on the local road network. Following the initial closure by the Police the county Highways department will move in and close the road more definitely using signs or even pouring gravel over to block the road.
