Outer Cordon PDF Print E-mail

This cordon is established by the Police in order to prevent anybody who is not involved in responding to the incident to keep away from the site for their own personal protection and also to allow the responding services the necessary space to carry out their duties effectively. Resources such as barriers, tape, rope, signing, police dogs and even CCTV and passive alarms systems will be used as appropriate.

The cordon ensures a safe and clear working environment for the emergency services involved with the incident. This outer cordon can extend some distance. Following the Manchester bombing of 1996 an initial outer cordon was established with a radius of some 400 metres (albeit that it was reduced significantly in the days following the event).
