Windows
  • A third of all domestic burglaries involve entry through a window.
  • Windows should be certified to British Standard (BS) 7950.
  • Ground floor windows and vulnerable first floor windows should be fitted with laminated glass.
  • Louvre windows are especially vulnerable and should be replaced with fixed glass.
  • Fit key operated window locks on all windows except escape routes.
  • Keep windows closed and locked unless you are in the room, close and lock windows when you leave a room.
  • Remove keys and keep them out of sight.
  • Skylights and roof-lights should also be kept locked, even in conservatories.
  • Even small windows such as those in toilets need locks.A thief can get through any gap larger than the human head.
