How can I Report a Hate Crime

This page provides an opportunity for you to contact us online and report a hate related incident.

Hate crime is under reported. Hate crimes and incidents can be about hatred of race, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or disability.

Any hate crime is a crime, being different isn’t’. Reporting makes a difference - to you, your friends, and your community.

Hate incidents and crimes are defined in the Hate Crime Operational Guidance produced by the College of Policing in 2014 as:

Hate incident

Any non-crime incident which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Disability
  • Transgender

Hate crime

A hate crime is any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Disability
  • Transgender

What does this mean?

Are you or someone you know:

  • Being called names?
  • Being hassled or threatened?
  • Being beaten up, spat at or kicked?
  • Having your things stolen or damaged?

Just because of your own or someone else’s:

  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender identity
  • Disability.

If you can answer yes to any of these questions then this is classed as a hate incident or crime and it will be treated seriously and dealt with robustly by Wiltshire Police.

If you are a victim of hate crime we urge you to contact us.  We can offer you advice, support and follow up visits.

Increasing the awareness of what constitutes hate crime and incidents and encouraging members of the public to report events they have witnessed, or experienced is vital to enable police and partner agencies to take appropriate action to tackle it. We want and need to hear from victims and witnesses which will assist us in directing appropriate intervention and action.
