Statement for Wiltshire Police 2016/17

Wiltshire covers a varied but mainly rural geographic area, including flourishing market villages, and strong industrial towns.

Wiltshire Police is a values based, technology advancing organisation, utilising collaboration to provide the best possible service to the public.

Wiltshire Police operates across an area of 3,485 sq/km1The county has two unitary authority areas, Wiltshire and Swindon, consisting of 18 community areas and seven localities.

Wiltshire has a population of approximately 684,0002 people, with a wide range of socio-economic characteristics. Wiltshire is a largely rural county with the main towns of Swindon, Salisbury, Chippenham and Trowbridge hosting the more densely populated communities. The County has a large military personnel presence of over 30,000, and is also home to Stonehenge and the busy M4 corridor.

The Force has over 2,000 staff, including 1,016 police officers supported by PCSOs and police staff. The Force is capably supported by special constables and volunteers throughout the County. Within the last year, the Force has received approximately 581,611 calls for service and recorded approximately 36,133 crimes3. Crime volumes in Wiltshire are low compared to other force areas.

Wiltshire has a budget of just over £100 million, which has seen a real terms reduction in funding of 31% over five years.5 Wiltshire is one of the cheapest forces, with officer cost per head of population consistently amongst the lowest in the Country, providing good value for money.

The Force has embarked on a number of collaborative projects in order to continue providing an efficient and effective service, including creating strong relationships with the local authorities and regional forces.  Partnership working, co-location and campuses are the essence of public sector services both in Wiltshire and Swindon.

The priorities for the Force are:

  • Secure a quality police service that is efficient and trusted
